I did a first script but it got deleted. The actual script we used is very different due to the group altering it which improved it and originally I wanted it to seem natural like a conversation but this would have been cheesy and difficult to do so instead we just did it as an over the top commentary which plays as you watch our final product and the preliminary side by side
Here is the final Video: (Credit to Teknoaxe for the music, Commentary by Laura Rust and Clara Dailey)
In this video Clara and Laura speak about what we learnt and did differently from the preliminary all the way up to the final product.
The areas they talk about are:
Lighting: This was one of the big things we changed. The preliminary didnt need to have lots of different lighting as we werent trying to create a certain atmosphere where as in Amara we wanted it to be dark and cary and we even had to re-shoot lots of the OTS due to lighting problems. In the end we used various techniques to improve the lighting such as artificial lights and editing effects.
Positioning: In the preliminary we had a very simple story and script so positioning really didnt matter however in our final poiece this was important so that it all looked believable and gave across a clear story and wasnt confusing.
Costume: For costumes in the preliminary we juist used what we had on. This is because we didnt develop characters at all we were just playing ourselves so we had no need for them to look a certain way or be represented a certain way which is very different to Amara as the vharacters had to look the part otherwise it would have been pointless even having the characters there. Colour representation links in to our costumes as we werent trying to show our characters a certain way in the preliminary but in the final product we wanted the lead female to wear pink as it is associated with females and Amara to wear white showing her once held innocence.
Editing: When editing the preliminary all it consisted of was cutting the shots so that they fitted together smoothly. Our final video on the other hand required lots more time as we edited music, other sound, lighting, titles and cut a lot more clips together.
Camera angles, shots and movements: Due to our very simple story and characters we didnt need to shoot anything a certain way in order to create an atmosphere and tension. This was completly the opposite to Amara where a lot of what we did was to create an unsettling atmosphere and create a build up.
Casting: Just like the costumes in our preliminary we just used actors we had near us and who were wiling to be in it. therefore as we didnt have characters it didnt matter what the actors looked like as they didnt have to look a ceratin way. Our final product was a lot more precise as we wanted the film to center around a japanese yuri (like films such as The Grudge and The Ring), we had to cast it more tactfully and pick someone who could look like what we wanted, thus Clara was cast in the role.
Location: As Laura explains when we started the preliminary we just used a place around the corner where there wasnt a lot of people going through so we could film it and get it done quicker. For Amara we ended up filming at 3 locations before we found the right place instead of just picking the first place we found
After looking at all these different things we learnt I can see why all these things were so different between the two tasks. For the preliminary convenience was the main factor. We used a location near us and used actors and costumes we already had. This was not the casze for the final product. This was mostly about atmosphere and story. This meant we did clever casting, re-shoots to get it just right and a lot more editing and time was put into it.
