Today we learned about Camera Angles. We found out how different angles can give of different shows of power/status. For instance a high angle portrays dominance and a low angle portrays submission. A birds eye angle is good for an establishing shot, for instance if the environment is abandoned or full of people. We also learned about oblique angles and how they show direction. We can use these in our OTS as they will subliminally tell the audience who is important and in charge and create a better more interesting environment.
LR Today we learned that if you don't use camera angles you can still use shots to make it interesting. However combining both angles and shots give off a better impact for instance if someone is talking you want either a neutral - mid shot or over the shoulder shot in order in order to have there expression and rough environment. You wouldn't have an extreme long shot as you cant see who is talking, what there reacting to and there emotions. Also it would be weird if the volume of the person talking remains the same when the person is 50ft further away then the last shot.
LR Today we drew a storyboard and the we did our assessment of our story board. We had to show that we understood the decisions made for each frame. For instance why we used what angle, shot or movement. We had to find out and understand why the directors of the film chose the shots/movement/angles they did and how that affects your viewpoint of the characters on screen. Like if you used a diagonal movement on a person you think that
|
We have also learnt about camera movement and how they can affect the audience. Here are some examples:
Handheld - this is where the camera is moved by humans which adds the feeling that you are there in the scene Pan movement - this is where the camera does a horizontal scan and is turned which gives you a full shot of the surroundings Tilt movement - this is where the camera does a vertical scan and is turned so you can see the height Crane shot - this is where the camera is above ground level and mounted on a crane Diagonal movement - this is a combination of Pan and Tilt. It is used to show that something isn't right. Dolly shot - this is where the camera tracks or follows the subject |
Today we learned about sound We learned that there were different types of sound and that they were classed as either Diegetic and Non-Diagetic.

We were told to use this 'Blog' as a notepad of sorts, so I decided to set it up so that all the key developments to our OTS (Opening Title Sequence) were in a group Blog and all the non-group decisions could go into our separate Blog's in order to outline who did what more clearly. I did a survey to see what sounds and general environments people found 'Scary' and turned part of it into an animation(as seen in Horror Ideas). I also think that no matter what sub-genre we decide on we could possibly call the OPS 'There was no Light', as a reference to the saying 'the light at the end of the tunnel'. I think this would be an good idea as I have already been cast as the 'Dumb Blonde' that dies instantly so we already have death. Also usually the suspense scenes in horror are set during the night to add to the air of mystery, as there is no light at night time so you don't see everything around you. So it is likely there will be some scenes either set in a dark place or at night.

Weebly - We were taught how to create a skeleton website. This means that we have all the pages ready to be used and updated. We were also taught how to add text, images, Video's and items from go animate. These skills are vital to our work and deserve a mention.
LR
LR
We learned how to use Go - Animate. We created our own account for it so that no one else can steal our work/sabotage it. Go Animate is a funner/ more exciting way to display our ideas. We also used Go Animate as it meant that our website has more visual ideas.

The Exchange - Today we filmed an Action scene in order to find out what we know already about filming shots, angles and movement. By filming this action scene it helped us realise what major mistakes we made and what we cant do while filming our horror film. This also helped us see a lot of Do's and Don'ts in filming (see on page).

Today we looked back on our video again, and found out ALL the do's and don'ts of filming. We also looked at the other groups videos and compared things like camera shots and angles. We found out that our last scene was considered 'lazy filming' as we had the opportunity to create 3 shots instead of the one that we used.

Today we were shown our youtube account and how to login, upload and also edit the tags/name of the video. We also learned how to download youtube videos and edit them for our site. We were told what not to do, and how not to get copyright issues, by editing the pitch of music, or picking royalty free. We were told to put our group initials on everything so that it is easier to find.

Preliminary task.- today we filmed our preliminary task which consists of walking, opening a door and then having a conversation with someone. To do this we had to be aware of the 'Principle's of Continuity'. This means that when you film a conversation you have to stick to the 180 degree rule and need to keep a consistent pace when going through doors.

Today we learned how to use Final Cut Pro, J rewinds the clip and L fast forwards. If you repeatedly click them you will speed up the process.Space plays it while K stops. I cuts a clip in while O cuts the clip out (in = start out = end) whilst in the insert bar. The arrows move the video frame by frame. In the Timeline you can cut the clip by using Alt[ to cut in and Alt] to cut out. B makes the curser into a blade so you can divide each clip in order to make editing easier. These shortcuts will help us both save time and improve the quality of our work.

LR
We edited our clips in Final cut Pro to find out how we could improve it without changing much. We were able to make some scenes shorter than required because afterwards we realised that an Action film has to have a lot of quick cuts between shots to keep the audience entertained.

Storyboards - Today we watched the grudge opening scene and then drew storyboard for 8 of the frames. We also looked at some examples of what not to do. we learned to use technical language, never have the same shot one after another and finally to make sure it makes sense.

Screwed - Today we were shown that there are 8 classic Horror shots. We were then told to go out and film our own short sequence including these shots. We were given different weapons, masks and filming locations. The 8 classic shots are the 360 degree shot, The off kilter shot, The over the shoulder shot of the killer, a close up/extreme close up of fear, a close up of the weapon, a high angle of the victim followed by the low angle of the killer a POV shot change between the killer. We had the shot of a stabbing without being hurt, and the victim and finally the power of suggestion.

Screwed - Today we edited our video. We added a title, different colour filters and extra sound effects in order to emphasise the video. We found that there is a fine line between good a good edit and overkill when it comes to effects.

Today I decided to research all of our options for our sub-genre, which will hopefully narrow the field for our final idea. I went online and found the definitions for each sub-genre and then re-write it so that I did not plagiarise anybodies work.I think we should do a supernatural-horror as we are only doing the opening scene so we don't need to have amazing special effects. I am also starting to wonder how we can put a death in when we only have 2 mins, and if we should have some spooky build up instead of some bad audio acting scene. This would be fixed by having a voice over narrator. Also if we do do this then the old testament of the bible has some really scary segments.

Today me and Clara decided on a name. We thought that it would be best if we didn't come up with a name that had probably already been used so instead we used a name. After looking up all the names with connotations to evil and hate we found the name AMARA, which means darkness. After finding a name for the film and main character (the evil and misunderstood spirit AMARA), we then decided to name our other characters names that are associated with Stupid girls - Stacie and Candice.

Today we created a short 'Film' to show that we understand how to use a camera and what shots work well where. The use of the props helped create a better atmosphere. There was little to no talking however so the actions had to speak louder then words. We also learned that fake blood is hard to apply in a short time so we are going to need a lot of time to get the actors looking the part without it screaming fake. We learned that you can still create an alright shot without a load of editing. I found that Liam and Clara were really reluctant to act and Kyle comes across as shy so we are going to need outside actors. Ms Wisby approved of our website so far and the 'Journal ' text. We also learned that you don't specifically need to have darkness to have a good shot.

Amara - We were told to show our work to the class and show what we has done so far on our OTS. Then we were given feedback on how to improve, we found that our lighting was not good enough. Then we found out that we also had issue with our dialogue. It was far too cheesy, and made the whole thing seem like a bit of a joke. The editing was not very good, as we did not use many transitions or effects meaning that everything was jerky and bland. We decided that after listening to our reviews that we should go back to the original plot of using a monologue
